What is a Mini Chiller?

liquid cooling units

mini chiller type

The mini chiller type liquid chiller units are water chillers with capacities from 1 to 50 tons of refrigeration. They are integral units that gather in the same cabinet the components of the system such as compressors, condenser and evaporator. Each of these components can in turn have several alternatives for their manufacture.

In the case of compressors, most of the time they are of the hermetic scroll type, although they can also be manufactured with semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors.

The most commonly used evaporator is the plate heat exchanger, due to its high heat transfer efficiency and small size. However, there are occasions when the liquid to be cooled may contain a certain degree of impurities, dust or even small debris and therefore shell and tube heat exchangers are recommended to avoid clogging the exchangers.

Likewise, the condenser in a chiller can be either air-cooled or water-cooled. The air-cooled condenser is by far the most commonly used alternative because it does not require a cooling tower and is easier to install and transport and does not require tower water for its operation.

Minichillers are used in a wide range of applications, among which the most common are:

  • Cooling of plastic injection molding machines.
  • Cooling in pressurized water jet cutters.
  • Cooling in anodizing processes.
  • Cooling of magnets in MRI machines.
  • Pasteurization Processes.
  • And more.
For the correct selection of a chiller of liquid is only required to be known:
  • Type of liquid to be used (usually water).
  • Water flow in Gallons per minute, Liters per minute, cubic meters per hour, or any other flow unit.
  • Chiller liquid inlet temperature (highest temperature).
  • Required outlet chilled water temperature.
  • Operating voltage.
