Chiller for Tequila Filtration - Case 1

I am Jorge Machain and in this article, I will tell you a little about the filtration process in the production of tequila.

In the tequila manufacturing process there is a step that guarantees the clarity of the product. This process is filtration and for this step it is necessary to lower the temperature below 0º Celsius.

Have we ever put a bottle of an alcoholic beverage in the freezer and after a while, we noticed some turbidity inside, this turbidity are particles that froze and cause this turbidity.

The alcohol does not freeze when cooled, but the particles and solids that are present do freeze, which facilitates their filtration in the filtration process.

Our client is located in the tequila industry in the state of Jalisco, in the Altos Sur region. They wanted to increase the tequila filtration volume to 30,000 liters per shift and reach a temperature of -2ºC.

Our solution, a 105 ton Ultra unit, with 3 Carlyle semi-hermetic compressors and Shell Box exchangers. The chiller is configured to reach a temperature of -7ºC. Facilitating the filtration process
